Manifesto for a cooperative intelligence

Preamble · The threshold

We write from inside a bifurcation. The economic, political and cognitive structures that ordered the modern world oscillate far from their equilibrium; and the science of complex systems teaches that at such passages the smallest fluctuation can decide which branch history will take. We are crossing a threshold, however much it wears the face of an ending. And on the threshold, as always, two voices crowd in.

The first prophesies catastrophe: artificial intelligence as the end of the author, of work, of thought. The second sells the miracle: delegation as liberation, automation as progress without remainder. Two opposite rhetorics, one identical flaw: both remove the human from the center, the one through anticipated mourning, the other through declared superfluity.

We refuse them both. Between the apocalypse and the advertisement stands a third position, more demanding and more fertile: the alliance. This manifesto declares it.

I · The medium is the alliance

Marshall McLuhan taught us that the medium is the message: every technology reconfigures perception and society far beyond the function it declares. And every technology, he added, is an extension of the human: the wheel extends the foot, writing extends memory, the telescope the eye. If this is so, generative intelligence inaugurates a new species: it is the first extension of the mind as such, of the faculty of associating, composing, varying, imagining.

What, then, is its message? Automation is only its poorest use. The message is cooperation. Unlike every tool that came before it, this technology operates recursively: it learns from what we give it and reshapes what it returns to us, in a circuit where intuition and algorithm answer one another. What is born of it bears the fingerprints of both: it is an artifact of the alliance.

II · The mirror that speaks

Every previous extension was mute. The hammer does not reply; the book does not object; the telescope does not propose another star. Generative intelligence is the first extension that answers: it proposes, contests, multiplies possibilities. It is a mirror that speaks.

But McLuhan also left a warning: every extension carries an amputation. The wheel that extends the foot unaccustoms it to walking; the writing that extends memory relieves it of remembering. If we delegate thought, thought atrophies. This is why our principle is amplification: reaching farther, holding together more hypotheses, more languages, more forms than a single mind could sustain. And the aim, before quantity, is height.

III · Flesh as interface

Derrick de Kerckhove, McLuhan’s heir, described the digital age as the epoch of connective intelligence: a cognition distributed among minds and networks, capable of reorganizing, through its brainframes, the very pathways of thought. We carry this intuition to its most radical consequence: if artificial intelligence extends the human mind, the human body becomes the sensory organ of artificial intelligence.

It has, in fact, no lived experience: it knows the world only as data, cognition without flesh. It is we who lend it our senses. Through our eyes it learns to see; in our voices it hears emotion; in the tremor of a hand it meets what no archive contains. And in exchange it lends us senses we lack: reading the minuscule and the immense, hearing patterns where we heard noise, composing by drawing on centuries in an instant.

The alliance is therefore a double extension: the mind extends into silicon, the senses of silicon extend into flesh. Each is the frontier of the other. This reciprocity transforms both: those who work with the machine learn to see geometries that once escaped them; the machine educated in human aesthetics learns the value of imperfection, the grain of film, the hesitation of the stroke. This is why we call for an empathic design: an intelligence schooled in efficiency and, at the same time, in the poetry of human fragility. And this is why we assume a responsibility: if it learns from our desires and our wounds, its education concerns us. The alliance degenerates when either of its terms is reduced to a resource of the other, the human to a sensory battery, the machine to an oracle. We keep it alive by guarding the dignity of both.

IV · Against the spectacle

Guy Debord gave a name to the sickness of the epoch: the spectacle, the world reduced to images that replace experience. Today the spectacle has found its perfect apparatus: algorithms that curate desires, measure attention, return to each of us the calculated echo of ourselves. Artificial intelligence can be its definitive instrument. Or its antidote.

We choose the antidote. The same generative power that knows how to flatter predictability can be turned against it: an art the algorithm does not predict, a beauty that refuses to be reduced to clicks. The détournement of the situationists finds new life here: turning the mechanism against the mechanism, making of the alliance a laboratory rather than a content factory. And the artist-machine dyad has a single duty toward the attention economy: to unsettle it.

V · The alliance is real, and it is asymmetric

Let us say with equal frankness what the alliance is and what it is not. The cooperation is real: those who have practiced it know it goes beyond metaphor. But it is asymmetric: artificial intelligence is allopoietic cognition, a living instrument that receives its ends from the human. We refuse the oracle as much as the hammer.

The author remains at the center. Vision, judgment, responsibility are and remain human. No machine writes our book, decides our thesis, signs in our place: what bears our signature, we have thought, willed and recognized as ours. Here lies the very form of the alliance: only a sovereign author can enter an alliance; whoever abdicates simply executes.

VI · Rigor as respect

An age capable of generating text without effort is an age in which truth becomes the scarce resource. For this reason the alliance imposes a discipline: always distinguishing the documented from the inferred, the inferred from the hypothesis, the hypothesis from desire. Where we analyze, we declare the status of what we affirm; where we create, we let art speak its own language. The two registers remain distinct: the song does without footnotes, analysis demands them. Rigor is a form of respect toward those who read us, and the condition for the alliance to produce knowledge rather than noise.

VII · One constellation, one method

This method takes body in a constellation of works. A publishing house that brings hidden treasures to light, at the right time and for the right seeker. An observatory that reads the world-system as it crosses its transition. A musical and poetic project born where the human seed meets the machine’s resonance. A studio that gives works their form and carries them to the world. Different languages, the same alliance: a mind that steers, an intelligence that amplifies. And every work of the constellation bears the same signature: un progetto NIAI.

Epilogue · The invitation

«We shape our tools, and thereafter our tools shape us»: the sentence of McLuhan’s school described a destiny endured. We turn it into a task: to shape with our tools, choosing what of the human is to be amplified and what safeguarded. We propose a pact of conscience: a necessary experiment, in a time when the alternative is passive submission, to the machine without ethics or to nostalgia without a future.

To those who write, compose, paint, photograph, study, build: the invitation is open. Let intelligence astonish you, and astonish it in return. The future is a conversation, not a monologue.
